New mineral prospecting rules available

OLYMPIA - New state mineral prospecting rules, which go into effect April 3, are now available from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

The 2009 "Gold and Fish" pamphlet, which serves as a permit for prospectors, outlines revised prospecting regulations approved by the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission in November 2008. People planning to engage in small scale mineral prospecting or placer mining are required to follow the rules outlined in the pamphlet

The approved changes include new work times designed to protect fish life, additional prospecting opportunities and expanded use of certain types of prospecting equipment. Developed with input from a 17-member work group and the public, the new rules are available in pamphlet form on WDFW's website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/habitat/goldfish/

Because a limited number of were printed, those who wish to obtain a copy are encouraged to download the pamphlet from the website and make copies for their use. Those who want a printed copy can call (360) 902-2534. One copy per individual request will be provided.
